What is a Mental Health Assessment?
A mental health assessment is designed to diagnose mental health conditions such as depression, anxiety, personality disorders, trauma, and many other mental health disorders such as substance abuse. It is the goal of the mental health counselor to differentiate between mental and physical health problems. A biopsychosocial interview is conducted to find out more about different areas of one’s life, the impact that symptoms have on functioning, and if the client meet’s criteria for a mental health disorder. Screening tools, the clinical interview, and the current edition of the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, are used collectively as part of a mental health assessment to determine diagnosis. Once such identification has been made, the client and counselor work together to tailor a treatment plan.
