At BHIC, we strive to make the process as smooth and stress-free as possible. Here’s what you can expect:

1

Initial DOT-SAP Assessment

The process begins once you receive a DOT drug or alcohol violation (such as a positive test or refusal to test). At this point, you must stop performing any safety-sensitive duties and schedule an appointment with a qualified DOT-SAP professional in Charlotte, NC.

At BHIC, we offer quick and easy scheduling to help you start this process immediately. The initial evaluation costs $250.00 and is designed to assess your situation and provide an appropriate plan for compliance.

2

Education and Treatment Recommendations

Following your assessment, we will recommend the necessary drug or alcohol treatment, counseling, or education program required by DOT regulations. This may include:

Alcohol Drug Education Training School (ADETS) – a state-approved educational program that meets DOT requirements.
Substance use treatment programs (outpatient or inpatient, depending on the evaluation results).

Each program is designed to ensure that employees receive the appropriate level of care and intervention before returning to work.

3

Follow-Up SAP Appointment & Return to Duty

Once you have successfully completed your recommended program, you’ll schedule a follow-up evaluation with your SAP professional. During this session, we will verify your compliance and issue your Return to Duty letter (cost $250.00), which will be sent to your employer.

For CDL drivers in North Carolina, this step also requires visiting the North Carolina Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) to reinstate your CDL license.

Follow-Up Testing Requirements

Even after returning to work, DOT regulations require follow-up testing to ensure ongoing compliance. The SAP will determine the follow-up testing plan, which includes a minimum of six random drug/alcohol tests in the first 12 months. Additional testing may be required for up to five years (60 months).

Next Steps

We serve professionals in all DOT-regulated industries who are committed to returning to their careers. This includes:
Commercial Drivers (FMCSA) – CDL holders and trucking professionals.
Aviation Personnel (FAA) – Pilots, flight attendants, and ground crews.
Railroad Workers (FRA) – Engineers, conductors, and dispatchers.
Transit & Pipeline Employees (FTA/PHMSA) – Operators and maintenance staff in public transit or hazardous materials.
Our DOT-SAP evaluations are conducted by qualified and certified SAP professionals who strictly adhere to federal guidelines, ensuring a thorough, efficient, and compliant path back to your livelihood.

What Is a DOT-SAP Assessment?

The Substance Abuse Professional (SAP) is a federally mandated evaluator who assesses employees who have violated DOT drug and alcohol regulations (49 CFR Part 40). If you test positive for drugs or alcohol, refuse a test, or otherwise violate DOT regulations, you are required to complete the SAP process before returning to safety-sensitive duties.

A DOT-SAP Professional Will

Conduct an initial assessment to evaluate your substance use and determine your required treatment or education program.
Recommend the necessary steps to comply with DOT regulations.
Monitor your progress throughout the process.
Complete a final follow-up assessment and provide a Return to Duty letter once you’ve met all requirements.

This process is essential for CDL truck drivers, airline employees, pipeline workers, transit operators, railroad employees, and other DOT-regulated safety-sensitive positions who have experienced a DOT violation.
